PowerShell ISE

As we saw in previous lession that you will see two options to start PowerShell in your system 1. Windows PowerShell and 2. Windows PowerShell ISE.

Let's go through the differences between two options.

If we choose 1st option then it will open a command-line window on which we can write any command and it's parameters and it will show output of that command on the same window.

If we choose 2nd option it will open a window which will have main three portions 1. Script pane, 2. Command-line OR output pane and 3. Commands pane

Script pane: This is a script editor, which gives ability to write script, save it and run it. It also allows to open existing script, edit it and run it. F5 is the shortcut to run script. Also, we can debug the script using this.

Output pane: It is similar to command-line window, we can run any command on that and also can see output of scripts which we have written in script pane.

Command pane: This pane is useful to see inbuilt commands and small help about the same. Also, you can execute the single or multiline commands in the command pane.

Useful features of Windows PowerShell ISE

  • You can write multiple lines on command-line by pressing SHIFT + ENTER keys.
  • You can run or execute your selection by pressing F8 or clicking on RUN SELECTION icon
  • You can see the help about any command using F1 key, select any command and press F1
  • You can toggle breakpoint on any line using F9 key
  • You can select any command e.g. select "Get-Date" command and it will ask to add values of parameters, you can skip that for now and click on "Run" button below Commands pane and it will show current date and time of the system.
